The temporomandibular joint is a hinge that connects your jaw to the temporal bones of your skull, in front of each ear. It lets you move your jaw up and down and side to side, so you can talk and chew. This joint is very complex and heavily used. Dysfunctions of the temporomandibular joint (TMD) can result in a lot of different symptoms, which patients do not necessarily associate to the jaw. Headaches, back- or neck pain and pain in the jaw itself are oftentimes symptoms of an undiagnosed temporomandibular joint dysfunction. This can have many causes: teeth grinding, increased jaw pressure, poor tooth fillings, missing or badly adapted dentures.
A functional analysis will help to detect dysfunctions of the jaw, teeth and muscles.
If symptoms indicate a problem in the temporomandibular joint, the masticatory system is measured electronically with the help of the functional analysis system (ZEBRIS). If a disease of the temporomandibular joint is detected, a plastic splint is then produced which is worn at night. After a while, the temporomandibular joints regain their physiological position and the discomfort decreases. In the second step, your dentist in Berlin (Mitte) can transfer the bite position, which was adjusted via the splint. Therefore, new crowns or dentures will be manufactured.
